Small City Living with Big City Amenities
Portage la Prairie is located in the Central Plains region of southern Manitoba, along the Assiniboine River just 70 km west of Winnipeg and 125 km east of Brandon, along the Trans Canada Highway. With a population of just over 13,000, Portage la Prairie offers all the services of a larger city—great shopping, recreation, health care—all within a short walk or drive.
The city is referred to as “The Island on the Prairies” based on its central feature, Island Park, which is almost completed surrounded by Crescent Lake, an oxbow of the Assiniboine River. The area is the site of an 18-hole golf course, the Portage Industrial Exhibition grounds, an outdoor water park, animal enclosures, walking trails, and Stride Place (indoor water park and home to the Portage Terriers hockey club).
The city is close to great recreational opportunities within a short drive including Delta Beach, Delta Marsh, St. Ambroise Beach Provincial Park, and Fort la Reine.
Portage la Prairie is serviced by 11 public and private schools, along with the Portage campus of Red River College (Winnipeg).
